Master of Science in Medical Microbiology, Immunology with Molecular Biology
Tuition fee: Local TZS 6,200,000 | International $ 5,600
Offered At: KCMC University
Directorate of Postgraduate Studies.
This programme is intended to provide knowledge, attitudes and skills in understanding the interaction between the human body and the various disease aetiological agents and the application of techniques used in microbiology and immunology, in investigating the functioning of the human body in health and disease. This highly specialized degree is intended to create competencies in highly specialized medical and biomedical fields and scientific attitudes relating to both public and individual health.
Objectives
The objectives of an MSc in Medical Microbiology, Immunology with Molecular Biology are designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience necessary to excel in the fields of microbiology, immunology, and molecular biology, particularly in the context of human health and disease. Below are the key objectives of the program:
1. Develop In-Depth Knowledge of Microorganisms and Infectious Diseases
To provide students with a comprehensive understanding of pathogenic microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites) and the diseases they cause in humans.
To equip students with the ability to identify, classify, and diagnose infectious agents using advanced microbiological techniques.
2. Understand Immune System Function and Disorders
To impart knowledge on the human immune system, including both innate and adaptive immune responses, and how the immune system defends against infections.
To educate students about immune system disorders such as autoimmune diseases, immunodeficiencies, and hypersensitivity reactions.
3. Apply Molecular Biology Techniques to Study Pathogens and Host Responses
To train students in the use of advanced molecular biology techniques (e.g., PCR, sequencing, gene editing) to study microbial genomes, mutations, and host-pathogen interactions.
To provide expertise in molecular diagnostics, enabling students to detect and identify infectious agents and analyze genetic mutations.
4. Enable Research and Critical Thinking
To foster the ability to conduct independent research in medical microbiology, immunology, and molecular biology, using both laboratory-based and computational techniques.
To cultivate critical thinking skills that allow students to assess scientific literature, evaluate experimental data, and formulate evidence-based conclusions.
5. Gain Expertise in Diagnostic and Therapeutic Approaches
To teach students the diagnostic methodologies used in clinical microbiology and immunology, such as serology, PCR, immunoassays, and microbiological culturing.
To prepare students to explore current and emerging therapeutic approaches for infectious diseases, including vaccines, antimicrobial agents, and immunotherapies.
